VAI applauds FAA administrator’s support for Burke Lakefront Airport Three weeks ago, a coalition of local aviation businesses, pilots, airport users, students, educators, and industry professionals submitted letters to the Cleveland (Ohio) City Council urging city leaders to preserve Burke Lakefront Airport (KBKL) and recognize its important role in Northeast Ohio’s transportation network, workforce development, and economy. National aviation associations, including VAI, have also voiced support for the airport and Cleveland’s aviation community. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford recently expressed the agency’s opposition to closing airports across the country, specifically stating that “the FAA is not in favor of closing [KBKL].” In an interview with News 5 Cleveland following a tour of a major air traffic control facility in Oberlin, Ohio, Bedford emphasized the need to expand aviation infrastructure to meet future demand, including from drones and battery-powered aircraft. He noted that the conversation should focus on “how we open new facilities” rather than on closing existing airports and valuable aviation infrastructure. KBKL serves as a designated FAA reliever airport for Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (KCLE) and generates approximately $195 million in annual economic activity and supports 664 jobs. The airport plays an important role in developing Ohio’s aviation workforce by providing training opportunities for student pilots and supporting flight schools, mechanics, dispatchers, and other aviation businesses. Its location provides valuable access for business aviation and time-sensitive medical transportation while helping support the capacity and efficiency of the region’s aviation system. KBKL is also home to the annual Cleveland National Air Show, which attracts more than 100,000 visitors. VAI applauds the FAA’s position on keeping KBKL open and stands with Cleveland’s aviation community in opposing Mayor Justin Bibb’s proposal to close the airport.
