PMHC applauds FAA’s new mental-health special issuance pathway New AME-Assisted Special Issuance pathway streamlines medical recertification for certain pilots and contract controllers with anxiety, depression, and related conditions. The Pilot Mental Health Campaign (PMHC) on Aug. 7 on its LinkedIn channel praised the FAA for the release of the Aviation Medical Examiner (AME)–Assisted Special Issuance (AASI) for Anxiety, Depression, and Related Conditions Path, a new approach that allows AMEs to reissue medical certificates to eligible airmen who have received FAA authorization for the program. The FAA continues to make the initial Special Issuance determination. The organization further applauds the FAA “for making changes to shift responsibility toward self-monitoring and collaborative decision-making between the treatment provider and airmen.” VAI congratulates the PMHC for its great work in continuing to push this important issue forward. This is meaningful progress toward a system that supports pilots seeking care while protecting aviation safety.
