FIFA World Cup 2026: What Our Members Need to Know The FIFA World Cup is officially underway! As millions of fans travel across the United States to attend matches, VAI continues to actively engage with the FAA and other stakeholders to monitor potential impacts to vertical lift operations, advocate for our members, and provide timely operational updates. While the tournament spans five weeks and 11 host cities across 9 states, any operational impacts are expected to be limited to peak periods surrounding matches and fan fests. Operators may experience increased airport traffic, occasional delays, and potential VFR restrictions near host-city airports, much like those associated with other large-scale sporting events. To help operators stay informed, the FAA has published event-specific information in its Domestic Notices, under the “Major Sporting, Entertainment, and Other Events” section. Information includes: • Airport-specific planning guidance • Prior Permission Required (PPR) and reservation procedures • Expected traffic impacts and peak periods • Security requirements • VFR operating limitations on match days • Routing recommendations • Air traffic control contact information. Currently, VAI has not heard of any unusual restrictions specifically targeting vertical lift operations during match days. However, if you encounter operational challenges that go beyond the FAA’s published guidance, please reach out to KatiaV@verticalavi.org. And a friendly reminder from previous VAI posts: Unauthorized drone operations around match venues and fan fests remain prohibited, so be sure to review applicable restrictions before flying. More details can be found on the FAA’s FIFA World Cup 2026 website. As the United States hosts the world’s biggest sporting event this summer, we encourage operators in host cities to plan ahead, keep an eye on TFRs and FAA notices, and exercise a little extra patience with local airports and air traffic facilities during peak match periods. Enjoy the matches and fly safely!
