PHMSA issues rule on pipeline inspections using drones

The US Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) direct final rule, “Pipeline Safety: Integration of Innovative Remote Sensing Technologies for Right-of-Way Patrols on Gas and Hazardous Liquid Pipelines,” goes into effect Oct. 9.

Final FAA AD: Airbus Helicopters H160-B

This FAA airworthiness directive (AD), which takes effect Jul. 17, requires certain operational checks and the downloading and analysis of certain data. It also requires repetitively performing a flight under specific conditions, as well as an inspection of the grease on the swashplate bearing.

Joby conducts electric air taxi trials in United Arab Emirates

Joby Aviation has begun flight tests of its electric vertical takeoff and landing air taxi in Dubai as it works toward launching commercial passenger operations in 2026. The company is also developing a vertiport with Skyports Infrastructure at Dubai International Airport (OMDB).

Final FAA AD: Airbus Helicopters Deutschland EC135 series and EC635 T2+

This FAA airworthiness directive (AD), which takes effect Jul. 17, requires a visual inspection of the ball pivot, a fluorescent penetrant inspection of the control rod, and a visual inspection and measurement of certain parts of the yaw-actuator assembly. The AD also prohibits installing an affected part unless certain requirements are met.

Proposed FAA AD: Leonardo AW169

The FAA is seeking comments on this proposed airworthiness directive (AD) through Aug. 15. It would supersede AD 2024-09-02, issued May 21, 2024. The proposed AD would retain the actions of the existing AD while requiring the replacement of certain forward-float and aft-float assemblies within 24 months or during the next maintenance check.
