White House issues EO reshaping federal wildfire response

VAI is reviewing the potential impact of the US presidential executive order (EO) on helicopter firefighting operators.

US President Donald Trump on Jun. 12 issued an executive order (EO), “Empowering Commonsense Wildfire Prevention and Response,” directing the consolidation of federal wildland firefighting into a single program to improve coordination and response. This action could significantly impact aerial firefighting operations, particularly for helicopter operators who play a critical role in federal response efforts. However, the EO lacks clarity on how or when aerial firefighting contractors may be affected.

The order also directs the secretary of defense to prioritize the sale of excess aircraft and aircraft parts to support wildfire mitigation and response efforts.

VAI will engage directly with members of Congress and the US Departments of Interior and Agriculture to ensure that industry concerns are addressed and that industry expertise is reflected in the new structure. We will share a detailed analysis and next steps when more information becomes available.
