Section 232 UAS investigation: What it is and how it impacts you

The US Department of Commerce has issued a request for public comments related to a Section 232 national security investigation into imports of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and their parts and components. This effort will assess whether such imports have the potential to threaten national security by undermining the domestic UAS supply chain.

The investigation could result in new tariffs, trade restrictions on imported UAS parts and components, or broader impacts on supply chains. It will look at factors such as the impact of foreign government subsidies, current demand for UAS parts and components, and the feasibility of increasing domestic manufacturing for this segment.

VAI will share its draft response with members in the coming weeks. At that time, VAI will encourage members to submit their responses, using VAI’s response as a template and adding any unique details they wish to provide.

Responses to the request for public comments are being accepted through Aug. 6, 2025, offering stakeholders a chance to influence the outcome of the investigation.

Please watch for additional information in the coming weeks.
