Helicopter pilots and mechanics, Metropolitan Police Department

The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., is recruiting Helicopter Pilots and Aircraft Mechanics to support public safety aviation operations.

Helicopter Pilot Positions

Key Duties

1.       Operate MPD’s rotary-wing aircraft for public safety missions, including patrol, search and rescue, perimeter management, surveillance, and critical incident support

2.       Coordinate with flight officers and other agencies during emergency and planned operations

3.       Opportunity for Lead Pilot assignments by shift

Minimum Qualifications

1.       FAA Credentials: Commercial Pilot Certificate – Rotorcraft-Helicopter with Instrument Rating

2.       Medical: Current FAA Class II (or higher) medical certificate

3.       Flight Experience (minimums):

1.       1,500 total flight hours

2.       1,000 rotary-wing PIC

3.       100 night hours; 50 instrument (actual/simulated)

4.       Background: U.S. citizenship or work authorization, valid driver’s license, ability to pass MPD background and drug screening

Preferred Experience

1.       Public safety or EMS aviation missions

2.       NVG operations

3.       Instructor/check pilot certification


Aircraft Mechanic Positions

Key Duties

1.       Perform scheduled and unscheduled inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on MPD’s aviation fleet

2.       Maintain airworthiness and ensure compliance with FAA standards and MPD operational requirements

3.       Work closely with pilots and safety officers to ensure mission readiness

Minimum Qualifications

1.       Certification: FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) License

2.       Experience: At least 3 years of aircraft maintenance experience, preferably on rotary-wing aircraft

3.       Knowledge: Familiarity with FAA regulations, technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools

4.       Background: U.S. citizenship or work authorization, valid driver’s license, ability to pass MPD background and drug screening

Preferred Experience

1.       Maintenance on Bell 407 or similar platforms

2.       Public safety or law enforcement aviation maintenance

3.       Familiarity with NVG-compatible systems
