FAA renews NVG exemption for helicopter operators through 2027 Exemption allows Part 91 and 135 operations using night-vision goggles without a functioning radar altimeter at off-airport sites. The FAA has granted an exemption extension (Exemption No. 18973C) permitting helicopter operations using night-vision goggles (NVG) without a normally functioning radar altimeter under certain conditions. The exemption applies to Part 91 and 135 operators and allows takeoffs and landings at unimproved or off-airport sites across the contiguous US. Operators must submit a Letter of Intent through the Federal eRulemaking Portal (https://www.regulations.gov/docket/FAA-2021-1028) and comply with outlined conditions—including aircraft lighting requirements, pilot training, and prior site evaluation—to use the exemption. The revised exemption remains in effect through June 30, 2027.
