VAI Webinar, Aug. 27: Prepare for Your FAA Medical Like It’s a Checkride Do your homework and be ready with proper documentation before you go for your exam. A 17-year-old plans to start flight school in preparation for a professional pilot career. He’s been on ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) meds for the past 10 years. He reports the drugs he’s currently taking and notes his ADHD diagnosis in MedXPress. Knowing the medications resolve the ADHD and that he’s had no issue since he started taking them, he doesn’t think much more about it. Imagine the crushing blow when he’s denied an FAA first-class medical certificate. A professional helicopter pilot goes in to renew her medical. She received a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism 11 months ago. She’s under the care of a physician and medication has solved all her symptoms. She’s stable, so she notes as much when filling out MedXPress. However, the pilot needs to have her physician send detailed documentation about her condition before the aviation medical examiner (AME) will issue the medical certificate, causing a delay that could potentially cost the pilot work. As the above examples show, the biggest mistake pilots and aspiring pilots can make when visiting an AME is to show up unprepared. It pays dividends when you do your homework, understand what documentation you need, correctly fill out MedXPress prior to your visit, and know how an illness, injury, or diagnosis can affect your medical.
