VAI@Work Webinars: Powered Lift Aircraft Category – New Aircraft, Common Goal

November 14, 2024

For the first time in over 80 years, the FAA has created a brand-new aircraft category—powered-lift. Designed to support the continued development and integration of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft into the US National Airspace System, SFAR 120: Integration of Powered-Lift: Pilot Certification and Operations offers direction for pilots and operators of future VTOL aircraft.

The SFAR defines the new category and walks through the requirements for pilots to achieve ratings in powered-lift as well as the pipeline for first and future pilots and instructors. It also delves into Part 91 and 135 operations for the aircraft, which blend helicopter and airplane rules where applicable while also providing a roadmap for the first VTOL operators.

Overall, response has been positive and industry members are revving up to use the rule, which goes into effect Dec. 21, 2024.

VAI Director of Regulatory Affairs Amber Harrison has been scouring the 880-plus-page document to help VAI members boil down what the SFAR means for them and their operations. Regardless of the aircraft you currently make or operate, the introduction of powered-lift has the ability to benefit us all.
