Mark Bennett Photo VAI survey: Over 25% unprepared or just starting to prepare for 2027 SMS mandate Are Operators Ready for the 2027 SMS Mandate? By Chris Hill A recent VAI survey reveals a mixed picture regarding industry readiness for the FAA’s May 28, 2027, safety management system (SMS) compliance deadline. While just under half of the 77 respondents reported already being in compliance, roughly one-quarter of operators indicated they’ve either only just begun the process or haven’t started at all (see pie chart below)! That reality should get everyone’s attention. A proper SMS implementation doesn’t mean placing a binder on a shelf or completing a check-the-box exercise. Pencil-whipping compliance, or making false claims of implementation, can be catastrophic for a business and far worse for the people depending on it. Unidentified or ignored hazards don’t disappear simply because you signed a form. The good news is there’s still time to build a meaningful, scalable SMS that fits your operation. But the clock is literally ticking away on this one! VAI strongly encourages operators who haven’t yet started or are still in the early stages to treat this as an existential threat to their business. To help, VAI has partnered with six leading SMS providers to offer solutions tailored to different operational sizes and complexities. VAI also offers complimentary access to its Framework for Safety Guidebook, which was designed to help small operators better understand practical pathways toward SMS implementation.
