FAA to deploy Mobile Clearance for general and business aviation pilots By VAI Staff The FAA is taking another step toward modernizing aviation with Mobile Clearance—a new digital capability that lets general and business aviation pilots request IFR departure clearances through approved flight apps like ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot. Instead of reading clearances over the radio, pilots can request them with just a few taps on a phone or tablet. Beginning in August, pilots will also be able to cancel IFR electronically, making the transition to VFR even easier. Why it matters: ✈️ Reduces controller workload by moving routine communications off the radio ✈️ Improves safety by eliminating readback and transcription errors ✈️ Gives controllers more time to focus on aircraft movement and runway safety ✈️ Brings a capability that larger, more complex operators have used for years to the broader general aviation community—right from the palm of your hand. The FAA began evaluating Mobile Clearance in Houston, Texas, this past spring, with additional testing now underway in Wisconsin and Kansas. More locations are planned this fall, with nationwide deployment expected to begin in 2027.
