FAA seeks comments on revised flight restrictions near KDCA

The FAA is accepting comments through Feb. 23 on revisions to the flight restrictions over the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA) that would reduce the potential for midair collisions involving helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft traffic. The revisions will fully implement a recommendation from the US National Transportation Safety Board. The interim final rule takes effect today, Jan. 23.

Modern Skies Coalition urges passage of transportation funding bill

VAI joins the coalition of aviation stakeholders to encourage members of the US Congress to pass the FY 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies appropriations bill, which includes an increased investment in US air traffic control modernization and legislation and prevents the FAA from closing during future US government shutdowns.

NTSB preliminary report: MD 369FF, Superior, Arizona, Jan. 2, 2026

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report indicates that a witness saw the helicopter strike a highline/slackline before the tail boom separated from the fuselage. Investigators found slackline webbing embedded in the vertical stabilizer. Four people died in the accident.

Final FAA AD: PZL-Świdnik W-3A

The FAA is accepting comments through Mar. 9 on this airworthiness directive (AD), which requires repetitive inspections of the main-rotor blade attachment bolts and replacement, if necessary. It also requires reporting the inspection results. The AD takes effect Feb. 6.

Final FAA AD: Airbus Helicopters Deutschland EC135 P1/P2/P2+, EC135 T1/T2/T2+, and EC635 T2+/T3

This FAA airworthiness directive (AD), which takes effect Feb. 26, requires inspecting the axial displacement of the tail-rotor driveshaft and taking corrective actions, if necessary, including inspecting the flexible couplings. The AD also prohibits installing a tail-rotor driveshaft without following certain procedures.
